Netflix to make acquisitions?

Netflix is looking to make acquisitions following its move to raise $400 million in new debt, the company said last week.

The online video service will use $225 million to refund $200 million of existing notes at lower interest rates. The rest will be used for corporate spending including capital expenditures, investments, working capital and potential acquisitions.

This money could also be used for more original programming if the company’s own political drama “House of Cards” proves to be successful. The series stars Kevin Spacey who plays a US Congressman bent on revenge after being passed over for the position of Secretary of State and cost a reported $100 million for two seasons. The Netflix difference, however, is that subscribers can watch all 13 episodes of the first series at once without having to suffer the usual week long suspense which comes with other network series.

In the fourth quarter of 2012, Netflix added 2.05 million streaming users in the US alone, meaning they now have 33 million streaming users worldwide. These strong results were mostly due to record numbers of consumers activating electronic devices such as tablets and smart TVs during the Christmas season.

This news led Netflix’s shares to surge to new heights two weeks ago as its stock climbed $43.60 to $146.86, the biggest single day gain since the firm went public more than a decade ago.  Despite this, Netflix’s video-licensing bills are piling up. By December 2012 the firm owed $5.6 billion during the next five years and many analysts are questioning whether such high share prices are justified.

Al Jazeera increases its presence in US

Qatar-based news network Al Jazeera, which has struggled to gain a foothold in the US cable market has bought Current TV, the left-leaning political channel owned by former US vice-president Al Gore.

Al Jazeera’s international English language channel can currently only be viewed in a few large US metropolitan areas such as New York and Washington DC, where 4.7 million homes have access to the network. The new move will give Al Jazeera greater reach boosting its penetration to around 40 million households, 40 percent of the total number with cable or satellite services.

Current TV will close to make way for a new network, Al Jazeera America, which will add five new US bureaus beyond the five it already has, as well as add a host of new journalists to its workforce. The new channel will provide national and international news for its US audience.

However, it won’t be all plane sailing for Al Jazeera, which has faced hurdles with US distributers and viewers in the past. Distributor Time Warner Cable, which would have accounted for 12 million homes, has already revealed that it will be terminating its carriage deal with Current following Al Jazeera’s purchase.

Back in 2010 the network’s managing director, Tony Burman, blamed overly aggressive hostility from the Bush administration for reluctance among cable and satellite companies to show the network.

Gore deflected criticism from many quarters about selling Current TV to an Arab buyer, saying: “Current Media was built based on a few key goals: To give voice to those who are not typically heard; to speak truth to power; to provide independent and diverse points of view; and to tell the stories that no one else is telling. Al Jazeera, like Current, believes that facts and truth lead to a better understanding of the world around us.”

Founded in 2005, Current TV is expected to post $114 million in revenue in 2013, according to research firm SNL Kagan.

Global Pay-TV revenues continue to increase

The market for Pay-TV is growing worldwide across all platforms including cable, satellite and IPTV according to the latest information from US firm ABI Research.

The company, in its Pay-TV Market Data Report, predicts that revenues in this market will increase by $13 billion from 2011 to reach $236 billion by the end of 2012. And this growth looks set to continue rising 19 percent to reach $281 billion by 2017.

Of the different platforms, cable is predicted to retain the majority of the global revenue, although it is expected to lose some of the lion’s share to both satellite and IPTV according to the research firm.

“Growth in satellite and IPTV services comes at the expense of cable. This competitive shift will lead cable TV revenues to fall about 1 percent in 2012 despite a small increase in average revenue per user (ARPU). Global cable-TV service revenue market-share is expected to drop to 47 percent in 2012 from 48 percent in 2011,” explained ABI’s Jake Saunders, vice president and practice director of core forecasting.

US satellite operator DirecTV was named by ABI Research as the global market leader in terms of both subscriber base and service revenue. The provider experienced ARPU growth in the US as a result of higher penetration in premium packages and saw significant subscriber and revenue growth in Latin America. Having said that, the operator’s overall ARPU fell slightly as customers continue to choose cheaper packages.

Sky launches internet service

Sky has officially joined the list of big name movie providers on the internet with the UK launch of Now TV, its pay-as-you-go internet TV service.

Going head to head with other providers such as Lovefilms and Netflix, Now TV’s initial service costs £15 a month and allows customers to access more than 600 movies, including both classic and new releases. The service also guarantees five new Sky Movies premiers every Friday. The service can be accessed through PCs, Android mobile phones and Macs and iOS devices.

Movies can also be rented on a pay-as-you-watch basis through Now TV with titles costing between 99p and ÂŁ3.49 according to their release date.

It is expected that Sky will add sports channels to the package before the end of the year, and add entertainment content some time in 2013.

The hope is that Now TV will allow Sky to extend its reach to the 13 million UK households that do not subscribe to a paid TV service.

Both Netflix and Lovefilm offer their services at a much cheaper rate of £5.99 and £4.99 a month respectively. However, Sky’s managing director of sales and marketing, Stephen Van Rooyen was quick to defend Sky’s pricing saying: “We think our offering represents value as no other service in the UK is offering as many new films with five new premieres a week. We didn’t want to offer a service which was similar to ones out there at the moment.”

Now TV is the latest release by Sky allowing customers to access its content without the use of a satellite dish. Previous releases include Sky Go and Sky Player. However, this is the first pay-as-you-go offering from the broadcaster.

Sky heralds in new format

As a direct challenge to LoveFilm and Netflix, BSkyB is launching its own pay-as-you-go internet TV service which will enable viewers to watch TV content whether they are Sky subscribers or not.

The service, which as yet still remains unnamed, will be available across a range of different devices including Macs, PCs, tablets, mobile phones, games consoles, laptops and internet-connected TVs. The move is seen as a departure from the subscription model, which has seen the number of people subscribing to pay TV services slow substantially over the last year as people download content from other sources. New subscribers will be able to choose between a range of pricing options from unlimited monthly access to pay-as-you-go, marking the first time that a company has sold TV content without a contract.

The news comes at a time when a number of online services battle it out for internet TV content domination, with US-based Netflix investing billions in new content deals to challenge Sky and Amazon’s Lovefilm. The movie rental market is worth around £400 million in the UK alone and digital downloads account for almost half of this market.

While BSkyB has a presence in more than 40 percent of UK and Irish homes it is hoped that the new offering will enable them to enter the other 13 million homes that are still to sign up to any form of pay-TV.

Attendance up at MIPCOM up 56%

It seems that MIPCOM is going from strength to strength, well according to the event’s latest attendance figures at any rate. The entertainment content market managed to pull in more than 12,500 people from 102 countries, including executives from 4,211 companies at last month’s event in Cannes. The increased attendance numbers were put down to a strong sales climate, expanding digital platforms and increased activity in developing markets.

Although the majority of business continued to be dominated by the major media players in the European market, there was significant increased activity from the developing market. The event’s Focus on Russia initiative was designed to educate international executives on the importance of the rapidly increasing Russian market, which is now worth more than €3.5 billion. It managed to attract senior executives from 160 different Russian companies resulting in a number of major deals. Twentieth Century Fox Distribution was just one company reporting success as it signed deals with Russian channels TNT, CTC and TV3 to run Russian versions of Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Bones, Tru Calling and Malcolm in the Middle.

And while the number of Russians at the event was up 20 percent on last year, Chinese participation also increased with the 52 Chinese companies present representing a 56 percent rise on last year’s figures. So if you want to be where the major players are then book accommodation for next year’s MIPCOM event EAS (Executive Accommodation and Services). Anne Sweeney will give a keynote address on Wednesday 5 October, as part of MIPCOM’s Media Mastermind series of presentations.

Named the ‘Most Powerful Woman in Entertainment’ by The Hollywood Reporter, one of the ’50 Most Powerful Women in Business’ by Fortune and one of ‘The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women’ by Forbes, Anne Sweeney is responsible for The Walt Disney Company’s entertainment and news television properties globally.

“We are extremely pleased to honour Anne Sweeney as our MIPCOM 2011 Personality of the Year in recognition of her unparalleled contributions to the global entertainment industry,” said Paul Zilk, Chief Executive of Reed MIDEM. “Of special note is her contribution to the expansion of Disney’s portfolio of channels, brands and programming worldwide, as well as her visionary leadership in fostering content on emerging digital platforms.”

“I am so very honored to be the recipient of  MIPCOM’s 2011 ‘Personality of the Year,’ said Anne Sweeney. “However the accomplishments which have led to this honor are not mine alone.  They are the result of the tireless efforts of so very many talented colleagues.  This event will allow me to acknowledge and celebrate everyone on the Disney/ABC Television Group and Disney Media Distribution teams, who not only create some of the most acclaimed and popular programming around the globe, but also continually develop new, innovative distribution methods that meet the ever-evolving needs of consumers.”

In 2005, Anne Sweeney led the industry into the digital era when the Disney/ABC Television Group became the first media company to put television content on new platforms. Anne Sweeney joined the Walt Disney Company in February 1996 as President of Disney Channel and Executive Vice President of Disney/ABC Cable Networks. Previously, she was Chairman and CEO of FX Networks since 1993. Before joining Fox, she spent 12 years at Nickelodeon/Nick at Nite, in various executive positions.
