UK moving towards 4G slowly

British telecommunications company O2 launched the first ever 4G network in London last week. The UK capital joins Finland, Norway, Sweden and Germany in offering the fast speed network, which allows customers to download information over their mobiles at the same speed as a fibre-optic landline connection. The catch, however, is that it will only be available in 25 locations around the city to 1,000 Londoners who have agreed to participate in a nine-month trial – the largest Long Term Evolution (LTE) trial ever to be held in the UK.

Initially the trial will not involve phones, as no compatible handset exists yet. Instead Samsung dongles will be handed out which can be plugged into tablets and laptops. The test joins a similar project initiated last month by Everything Everywhere and BT, where 200 people in the village of St Newlyn, Cornwall were given 4G internet access for three months.

Despite the trial, the UK is still viewed as somewhat of a 4G laggard compared with the US, Germany and Scandinavia, which have been deploying 4G commercially for the last few years. It will not be available in the UK until the analogue television signals are switched off at the end of 2012. Even then the UK is unlikely to have its own service until 2017, something that could cost businesses up to ÂŁ730 million a year.

The new technology is capable of speeds of up to 150 megabits per second, although trial users are more likely to experience speeds of between 25Mbps and 50Mbps. When it is introduced nationwide it is expected to drop to between 10Mbps and 15Mbps, which is still faster than a fixed line broadband connection.

Invest in Africa

Africa is now the world’s second largest mobile market by connections after Asia according to a new report released this month by the GSMA. The Africa Mobile Observatory 2011 report states that mobile penetration has reached 649 million connections across the continent, which has seen the number of subscribers rise by an incredible 20 percent each year over the past five years.

And while the number of connections may be huge, around 96 percent of subscriptions are only pre-paid voice services meaning there is still massive potential for growth within the continent for data services. In fact 36 percent of Africans within the 25 largest African mobile markets have no access to mobile services. The GSMA estimates that if mobile operators could reach 100 percent they would be able to add more than $35 billion to Africa’s overall GDP. And how could they do this? Well the GSMA believes that cutting taxes applied to the mobile industry in many African countries would be a start. Kenya has seen a 200 percent increase in the number of handsets sold over the past two years since it abolished the 16 percent sales tax on them in 2009. But whatever African governments decide to do the mobile industry in the continent will continue to grow, and rapidly, with the number of mobile subscriptions expected to hit the one billion mark by 2016.

As you’d expect the world’s top mobile operators haven’t failed to recognise the African boom with France Telecom claiming it will increase revenue in Africa to €7 billion from €4 billion within five years. While last month Vodafone Ghana released figures showing a 32.5 percent growth in half-year service revenue for 2011 – not bad for a company that has only been in active in Ghana for two years.

So if you want to learn about all the latest mobile opportunities in Africa and beyond make sure you don’t miss out on the GSMA Mobile World Conference held in 27 February – 1 March 2012 in Barcelona. Mobile World Congress Heavyweights Confirmed

The GSMA released more details recently of its upcoming Mobile World Congress held in February/March, including an updated list of keynote speakers. And what a list it is, with big name CEOs from companies including eBay, Electronic Arts, Nokia, Vodafone, Interpublic Group and even Google confirming they’ll be giving their own industry insights at the Barcelona event.

Visitors can expect keynote speeches not only from the usual suspects of mobile operators and handset makers, but also from Internet companies, application developers, online commerce companies, and advertising and marketing firms. According to Michael O’Hara, Chief Marketing Officer, GSMA, this wider array of companies is further evidence of the expansion of what he calls, the “mobile ecosystem,” as it continues to branch out into new industries and technologies.

In addition to regular industry topics such as next-generation technologies, business strategy and new product ranges, the 2012 event will have a central theme of mobile marketing. Keep your eyes peeled for the ‘mPowered Brands’ programme where mobile advertisers and marketers will be unveiling the latest strategies and tools to help companies get ahead in the world of mobile marketing. Also for the third year running the Mobile World Congress will host App Planet. This award-winning exhibition will see more than 200 app-specific exhibitors congregate in Hall 7 to reveal all the latest technologies and developments from the rapidly growing apps industry.

So whether you’re after some expert insight from the top, looking to improve your company’s mobile marketing, or just there to check out the latest product releases, the Mobile World Congress 2012 is looking like an event not to be missed. For the best hotels, rented apartments, and a whole host of insider tips and information on Barcelona and the event itself, look no further than EAS, your friendly local travel agents. Android on top

Despite all the recent hype over the success of Apple as a global brand, smartphones that run on Google’s Android are continuing to dominate the mobile market at present, in the US at least.

New research published in September by the market research firm Nielsen shows that over the three month summer period, 56% of Americans who bought a new phone opted for Android. Apple, by contrast, only picked up 28% of the share during the same period. This surge in popularity means that Android is now the dominant player in the US, accounting for 43% of all smartphone subscribers. This compares with Apple’s iPhone, which has a 28% share of the overall market and Blackberry, which controls 18%. Nokia, Microsoft and Samsung make up the rest, together accounting for 11% of the American market.

Of course, as so often happens in technology markets, these figures could all change, especially if Apple decides to release the iPhone 5 as expected next month. According to Don Kellogg, Director of Telecom Research and Insights, the market share is likely to be volatile over the next few months in the run up to Christmas as more and more people decide to splash out on new handsets.

What is clear is that the launch of the iPhone 5 will only accelerate the pace of smartphone adoption in the US, as Apple and Android continue to take a bigger and bigger slice of the mobile technology pie worldwide. And with the Mobile World Congress taking place in Barcelona in February you can expect a large Apple presence, with all the latest information on the iPhone 5 and other new releases. Don’t miss out on the hype and book your accommodation for the event today.
